New Forest Family Weekend 21/22 October 2017

Penge Cycle Club Family Weekend in the New Forest

Register an interest.

Hold the date. On the weekend of 21st and 22nd October 2017, Penge CC is planning a weekend of cycling in the New Forest. There will be a variety of rides to suit everyone in the club from young, aspiring riders through to the young at heart with more mileage on the clock.

Twenty of us explored the area last autumn, with a day spent on the Isle of Wight, including one family with young children and had a terrific weekend with some memorable riding. There is some truly great cycling, with car-free roads through ancient woodlands that are perfect for a family ride. There is also more than enough for the mile-hungry kings and queens of the mountain.

Last year, we drove or took the train down to meet at the Forest Park Hotel in Brockenhurst on Friday evening. We had a big day on the Isle of Wight on the Saturday, with 3 groups split on speed/distance and then all met up in the bar and enjoyed a very sociable dinner in a local restaurant in the evening. Sunday rides were a little less intense and finished in time for a pub lunch and drive back to South London.

This year, we want to make it a real family weekend, with a mixture of Go Ride and Adult groups. We have 2 accommodation options and we need to move quickly to make reservations. Our first challenge is to make a decision on which hotel to go for. The options are:

Forest Park HotelBrockenhurst.
In the heart of the idyllic New Forest, a family run, dog friendly hotel, making for a perfect family break! This is where we stayed last year and it really is in the New Forest – you cycle from the hotel car park into the trees. It also has a lively bar and is a short walk to the restaurants and pubs in the village.

Avon Tyrrell lodgesBransgore.

This place looks amazing. Slightly different style, but there is loads to do if you want some time off cycling. Accommodation is a bit less formal – there are a number of lodges for groups or you can camp. We can either self-cater or try out a nearby pub. There should certainly be an opportunity for some singing around a campfire. You can also hire bikes to explore forest trails.

Costs for lodges is:screen-shot-2017-03-10-at-11-19-59So – accommodation for the whole weekend for one person (sharing a 6 person cabin) is £25.

Avon Tyrrell Camping – Bransgrove
Lots of options here – bring your own tent or have one of theirs
