Domestique Caps

domestique (noun)

A rider who works for the benefit of his or her team.

Our great club simply couldn’t function without a band of dedicated domestiques (our wonderful volunteers) who lead Sunday rides, organise events, coach at Go-Ride, marshal races, and even flip burgers at a BBQ. They do this without fuss or material reward, just for the love of cycling and the club. But now we’d like to give them something to say thanks. Introducing…the Penge CC domestique cap.

What are these caps?

They are special money-can’t-buy, exclusive caps awarded to Penge CC volunteers and ride leaders. They are made by Bioracer and come in 2 sizes (smallish and largeish).

How do I earn a cap?

  • Lead 10 or more Sunday rides in a year
  • Coach at the Youth Go-Ride club
  • Organise or be the main co-ordinator for a Penge CC event:
    • Time Trial;
    • a cyclo-cross race;
    • Tour de Penge;
    • Christmas party;
    • Summer BBQ.
  • Volunteer for 3 or more roles in a year:
    • marshalled at a TT;
    • swept the Hill Climb;
    • set up the cyclo-cross course;
    • ride lead at Tour de Penge;
    • baked cakes for the BBQ;
    • helped at social events;
    • or hundreds of other roles.
  • Gone above and beyond for sustained services to the club – e.g. committee roles, and, ummm…Winnie of SE20 Cycles, obviously!

We are regularly asking for volunteers, so please respond to our emails or Facebook posts.

However, you can also be added to our Ride Leaders email list. Just email Ian at adultrides@pengecc.org and let him know which groups you would be happy to lead.

Do you have any special skills or interests of use to the club? Such as:

  • amateur photographers
  • social media gurus
  • first aiders

Please let us know at volunteering@pengecc.org and we’ll keep you in mind when an opportunity comes up.

I’ve earned my cap, but you’ve run out of my size.

The caps are very similar sizes, so you may fit the other one. However, we may look to produce more in the future.

I don’t wear caps, can I have some gloves instead?

No. Caps are an essential item of cycling gear. Get with it.

I don’t like yellow, can I get a green one instead?

Ummm, no.

I offered to lead a ride or volunteer for an event at the last minute, can I still earn a cap?

We encourage all volunteers to commit to volunteering and ride leading in advance. This really helps us to plan events and ensure they can go ahead. We know that sometimes you may need to step in and lead a ride at the last minute. Maybe the previous leader is ill, or the ride is oversubscribed. We’ll try to keep track of these, but please contact Ian at adultrides@pengecc.org to let us know. We’ll add you to our spreadsheet.

I think I deserve a cap, but I haven’t been awarded one

We’ll do our best to award these throughout the year once people are eligible. However, if you think we’ve missed you, then please send an email to volunteering@pengecc.org

However, all decisions will be made by the volunteer and ride leader coordinators and are final.
